Surah Al-Mulk: An Insurance Policy For A Muslim

The Surah al-Mulk (Chapter 67) consisted of 30 verses and belongs to the Middle Makkan period. Al-Mulk means The Dominion or Lordship, Sovereignty, Allah’s capacity to carry out His Will and to do all that He Wills and nothing can resist or neutralize it. Here’s a beautiful recitation of this Surah by Abu Bakr al-Shatri:

The Messenger of Allah said: “There is a Surah in the Quran which contains thirty ayat which kept interceding for a man until his sins are forgiven. This Surah is ‘Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion.’ (Surah Mulk)” [At-Tirmidi & Abu Dawood]

Jabir r.a reports that the Rasulullah pbuh did not go to sleep until he had recited Surah ‘Alif Lam Meem Tanzil’ and ‘Tabarakallazi’.” (at-Tirmidhi)

Ibnu Abbas r.a said that one of the companions of the Rasulullah pbuh pitched a tent on a grave without realizing that it was a grave. During the night he heard someone reciting the Surah al-Mulk.  So he went to the Rasulullah pbuh and said:  “O Rasulullah, I pitched my tent on a grave without realizing it a was a grave and during the night l I heard someone reciting the Surah al-Mulk completely.”  To this, the Rasulullah pbuh replied: “It (Surah al-Mulk) is the protector and savior from the punishment in the grave. (at-Tirmidi)

Anas (radiAllahu anhu) reported Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wasalam) as saying, “There is a Surah which will plead for its reciter till it causes him to enter paradise” (Tabarakalladhi Biyadihil Mulk). [Tabrani]

Lets make an effort to revive the Sunnah of the Rasululah, memorize this Surah and makes it a habit to recite it every night before sleep. If we can put in all our effort and energy towards achieving a particular social goal…to meet up the deadline for that important project at work, to complete our MBAs or Ph.Ds, to secure a promotion at work…surely memorizing and making this Surah as a daily ‘amal is not that difficult. Add 70 000 salawat to that, recited at least once in a lifetime…hopefully we’ll rest in peace upon leaving this plane.

In the face of death, which part of the dunya can we pack in a luggage to take along with us?

Wallahu’alam…Allah knows best.
